Week 2, 2011-2012

This week,
this week the 10 year old worked on learning about prime numbers and order of operations, learned about multiplying 3 digit numbers by 3 digit numbers. she was introduced to exponents. she's doing a lot of work with estimation.  She also has to do algebra problems like n - 32 = 63, where she has to get n by itself by adding 32 to each side, and canceling the 32 on the right side. She hates this.  She's finished thru lesson 40 in Horizons 5.

The 8 year old has been practicing multiplication.  She also has algebra to do, problems like
n + 4 = 6 x 8.  She has to complete the problem by doing multiplication first: n + 4 = 48.  And then subtracting 4 on each side, to get n alone, and cancel the 4 on the right:
n + 4 = 48
    -4     -4
--------------
n       = 44
She also has to do problems like -
(9 + 3) + 6 = 9 + (3 + 6) (notice same numbers on each side, but parenthesis around different numbers).  Eventually, the problems become: (9 + __) + 6 = (__ + 3) + __, which she found very difficult.  So we had to work quite a bit on the concept that its always the same numbers on each side:)  She's getting it now, I think.

The kids only have a few subjects left on T4L.  We're moving on from that first week of Sept.  They are on the last bit of reading Witch of Blackbird Pond.  We're nearing the end of our Colonial America studies, and will move into the American Revolution.  The kids work on a Daily Paragraph Editing page every day - this has been great practice for capitalization and punctuation.
The 2yo is doing a lot of fingerpainting, lately.  She also loves her picture books from the library.  Only now, we get stuck on a certain page.  The Poky Little Puppy - we skip right to the caterpillar page and end there.  Pet Shop Lullaby - we skip right to the page with the parrot singing "rrrrock-a-bye baby", and we spend 30 mins on that page.
School is completed amidst standing on tables, throwing things, destroying things, sneaking upstairs...constant chaos!  I have to be OK with this chaos.  It is one of the biggest contributors to my meltdown last year.  So we're just taking it one disaster at a time:)  My blog posts are completed thru my internet phone and dictated mostly by voice recognition.  You'll have to excuse the bad grammar, and bad everything.  It is the only way that the blog will be posted.
